Japan began to research on vehicle networking technology in 1960s, Europe and America started vehicle networking projects around 2000, and China also develop the technology in 2009. The mmWave owns high bandwidth that has potential to be useful in vehicle to vehicle and infrastructure to vehicle applications, and plays a key role in the development of vehicle networking technology. Jaguar Wave cooperated with Panasonic and Honda to explore the use of connected vehicle safety technology that allows drivers to see around obstructing vehicles and other objects. We installed mmWave devices on light poles and a testing vehicle, finished the test of vehicle networking safety project on the smart mobility corridor along US-33 near Marysville Ohio.
Honda’s vehicle networking safety project aims to let drivers to know surrounding traffic conditions timely. The common civil wireless communication bands are quit crowded, it is difficult to meet the transmission demands of vehicle networking, which need a stable and fast data transmission way for support.
We installed 60GHz mmWave devices on light poles and a testing vehicle, connecting with cameras and dashboard. When the testing vehicle approaching the intersection, the mmWave device on vehicle connecting with the one on light poles automatically, the mmWave system provides a real time view of the oncoming traffic display live on the dashboard, so the driver can judge in advance and pass the intersection safely.
The camera captures real time video feed on coming cross their traffic, and transmits this video feed to the vehicles approaching the intersection through the mmWave device. On the testing vehicle, the mmWave receives the air information and displays the information on the dashboard area, so the driver can get the intersection traffic in time.
We use the 60GHz band which is not interfered by other wireless bands that ensure the signal transmission stability and safety, and avoid security issues caused by signal interference or signal interruption.
The wireless transmission distance of mmWave devices is more than 1km, which gives drivers enough time to predict in advance and improves traffic safety.
5G mmWave technology is one of the core components of vehicle networking technology, which can realize an instant communication with millisecond-level transmission latency between vehicles and between vehicle and ground. The research on connected vehicle safety technology has the potential to reduce collisions and save lives.
